Motivation – Keep your goals private

Over the last few weeks I’ve been researching different types of methods for strategic and creative thinking.  Recently, I came across this short presentation from Derek Sivers and I haven’t been able to shake it out of my head. It’s somewhat related to creativity – but more importantly how talking too much about your creative ideas can ultimately lead to their demise.  Quite an interesting concept, and a complete paradigm shift for many who feel that telling others about their individual goals will help to get them achieved.

Imagine telling someone that you meet today what you’re going to do. Imagine their congratulations and their high image of you. Doesn’t it feel good to say it out loud? Don’t you feel one step closer already, like it’s already becoming part of your identity?

Well, bad news: you should have kept your mouth shut, because that good feeling now will make you less likely to do it.Derek Sivers

As a small business owner and serial entrepreneur, it’s difficult to keep your thoughts, ideas, and goals to yourself – but there’s definitely truth in Derek’s thoughts that the satisfaction gained from simply talking about your goals is, in many cases, enough of an adrenaline rush to completely forego the actual steps required to actually achieve your goals.

Fun food for thought at 2 AM…
